Radon is a cancer-causing, radioactive gas. You cannot see, smell or taste radon, but it may be a problem in your home. When you breathe air containing radon, you increase your risk of getting lung cancer. In fact, the Surgeon General has warned that radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States today. If you smoke and your home has high radon levels, your risk of lung cancer is especially high. New studies are also indicating that exposure to radon may also lead to Alzheimer's and Parkinson's Disease later in life. That is why testing for radon levels is now more important then ever. Radon is a radioactive gas that has been found in homes all over the U.S. Radon originates from the natural breakdown of uranium in soil, rock and water and permeates into the air you breathe. Radon typically moves up through the ground to the air above and into your home through cracks and other holes in the foundation. Your home can trap radon inside. Sometimes radon enters the home through well water but compared to radon entering the home through soil, radon entering the home through water is in most cases a small source of risk. Any home can have a radon problem. This means new and old homes, well-sealed and drafty homes, and homes with or without basements. Elevated levels of radon gas have been found in homes across all states and areas. Statistics show that over 40% of homes tested in Illinois had elevated radon levels. (Above EPA's Action Level of 4.0 pCi/l) Testing for radon levels should be part of every home inspection during real estate transactions. Radon tests can easily be completed within the 5-day inspection time period. 48 hours is the minimum time of testing, using electronic continuous radon monitors set up in the lowest level living area(s) of a home. The tests are performed by IL licensed radon measurement professionals or technicians. |
